Gang member convicted of killing mall security guard

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A 21-year-old gang member has been convicted of shooting a Southland Mall security guard to death last February.

Marques Rainey, an unarmed security guard at Southland Mall, was shot to death while trying to break up a fight at the mall.  Thirteen months later, his family relived their nightmare in a Shelby County criminal courtroom.

"You seem like you've healed over the year and it comes back and it's just fresh all over again," said Chantrice Rainey, the victim's widow.

Friday afternoon, Terrell Loverson, 21, was convicted of second degree murder for Marques Rainey's death, which was caught on a mall surveillance camera.

"It's been long," said Chantrice Rainey.  "I think the hardest part was seeing the video of the actual murder."

On the surveillance video, Marques Rainey tries to stop Loverson by pinning him against a mall display.  Loverson breaks free and heads for a mall exit.  Before he leaves, he fires a single shot with a 9 millimeter handgun from four feet away, striking Marques Rainey in the chest.

"They had kind of gave me a warning of how much we would see, but it still didn't prepare me for seeing that," said Chantrice Rainey.

Defense attorneys did not claim Loverson was innocent, but argued that the murder was not premeditated and urged jurors to consider a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.

Jurors began deliberating just before 5:00 p.m. Thursday and returned their verdict just before 1:30 p.m. on Friday
