BROWNSVILLE, TN (WMC-TV) - The case of a Haywood County High School coach indicted for sexual battery and statutory rape of a student was heard in a Mid-South court Friday.

Chanda Franks was not in court Friday morning, but her attorney, Mark Donahoe, said at the Haywood County Courthouse that the defense asked the judge for more time.

"There were some other issues that needed to be worked out ahead of time with the district attorney's office," said Donahoe.

The softball coach was indicted by a grand jury on 19 counts of statutory rape and sexual battery.  The indictment said Franks had inappropriate contact with a student from November 2010 until February of this year.

Donahoe said Franks will plead not guilty.

"At that point, it'll be time for our investigators to go to work, for us to gain additional information, and begin to prepare the defense for the case," said Donahoe.

Donahoe said the case will be tricky for the prosecution and defense because it involves a minor.

"That doesn't necessarily mean the truth won't come out, but certainly it lends different aspects to a case that you wouldn't normally see," said Donahoe.

However, Franks' attorney remained optimistic.

"I certainly think it's overcomeable from a defense side, but that's certainly something we'll have to address," he added.

The arraignment has been reset for Wednesday, March 30.  Donahoe said his client is in good spirits.

"Doing fine at this time," he said.  "Ready to move forward with the defense of the case and do whatever is necessary to clear her name."
