Plumbing problem leads to gruesome discovery

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Two weeks after moving into her Memphis apartment, Korea Johnson had a plumbing problem.

"My bathroom toilet stopped up," said Johnson.

But a broken toilet is the least of her worries since her plumber made a shocking discovery just outside her door.

"When the plumber came out, he had to dig those grounds," said Johnson.  "He said he found some bones back there."

The bones were discovered shortly after midnight Friday.  By Friday afternoon, Memphis crime scene investigators crowded into the area where the bones were found and examined every item in the surrounding area.

"I live right in the back of the place where it happened," said neighbor Rosie Wilson.  "I've been having my window open and catching air and I thought ... I smelled something, but I didn't know what it was."

Memphis Police have not revealed whether the remains belonged to an animal or a human.

"I'm praying that it's not a human body, but I'm praying that if it is, they can find the family of that person," said Johnson.  "I'm thinking about moving, because there's too much going on over it, and maybe God is trying to tell us something."

A Memphis Police spokesperson said Friday she did not know how long it will take to determine whether the remains were those of a human.
