Contractors vie for jobs building Mitsubishi's new Memphis facility

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Mitsubishi is officially hiring in Memphis. Wednesday, more than 100 local construction contractors were at the Ag Center to vie for jobs to build the 350,000 square foot plant.

McMillan was one of the contractors who attended Wednesday's vendor fair to see if they qualify to bid on the construction of Mitsubishi's $200 million dollar facility.

"And a lot of that money is going to be able to stay right here in Memphis," said Susan Hadley Maynor of the Greater Memphis Chamber.

According to Chamber officials, general contractor O'Neal Incorporated is looking for local sub-contractors to build the extra-high voltage power transformer plant on 100 acres of the Rivergate Industrial Park in late Spring.

The general contractor is also dedicated to hiring women and minority contractors.

"This is exactly what the Memphis Economic Development Plan had in mind when it started a few years back," Maynor said.

Distribution jobs are common in Memphis, but a new manufacturing plant takes it up a notch. It's still unclear how many sub-contractors Mitsubishi needs, but they're only looking for construction bids right now.

"Plumbers, electricians, roofers, contractors...that type of stuff," Hadley said.

Chamber officials will announce a date for the supplier vendor fair later in the year.  The plant is scheduled to open in 2013, when 275 plant jobs will need to be filled.

The vendor fair continues Thursday at 8:30 a.m. here at Cook Convention Center, but don't show up unless you are a licensed construction contractor.
