Memphis Police recover stolen car from suspected "chop shop"

(WMC-TV) - Tires sit on the curb in front of 1401 Tunica Street in North Memphis, where police said they busted a suspected chop shop Wednesday.

"God has smiled on me.." sang one neighbor.

Another neighbor simply sang the praises of 24-year-old Brandon Webb, who police charged with running the illegal operation.

"I know the charges against him aren't true," said Tony Jones.  "That ain't no chop shop," he added.

Police said they found a stolen Honda Accord under a tarp in the back yard along with disassembled car parts and tools in the garage consistent with a chop shop.

But Webb told police he purchased the car on Craigslist for $6,500.

"He said he bought that off Craigslist just like the Cadillac he bought and the truck he bought off Craigslist," said Jones.

Neighbors said Webb is a mechanic and recently had a run in with an unsatisfied customer.

"Just had a misunderstanding with a customer and the customer made it what it really ain't," said Jones.

Police busted another suspected chop shop last year just around the corner from Webb's house.  That is where a pick-up truck stolen days earlier was found torn apart.

Police said they also found a sawed-off shotgun under Webb's bed.
