MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - Congratulations to the students and teachers at Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis. The school was selected as one of six finalists in a competition to have President Barack Obama as its commencement speaker.
The school's principal, Alisha Kiner, got the news directly from the White House and it was news she deserved to get. When Kiner took over at Booker T. Washington four years ago, the school had only a 55 percent graduation rate, and many of the other problems that you might expect to find in a school with students almost exclusively from poor, inner city families.
But Kiner and her team are beating the odds. They've moved the graduation rate up to 82 percent and student test scores are exceeding the state averages.
Memphis School Superintendent Kriner Cash applauded the group at Booker T. Washington for the school's high expectations. He said they're trying to be the best they can be. We're pulling for them to earn that Presidential visit, but either way, this team's a winner.
