Group holds meeting to help save Mid-South Coliseum

(WMC-TV) - A group of concerned citizens hope they can help save the Mid-South Coliseum.

"I started a Facebook page about a year ago and that's how we sort of all connected," said Scott Schaeffer.

Supporters of the Coliseum met face to face Thursday at a meeting hosted by the Memphis Heritage Foundation.  Many oppose the city's future plans for the fairgrounds, which include demolishing the 50-year-old landmark.

"There were mentions of public hearings, and that hasn't happened to date," said Schaeffer.

The group called a meeting of their own to share their ideas.

Memphis officials said preserving the Coliseum would cost too much.

Action News 5 toured the inside, which clearly needed a lot of work.  It would cost millions to put the building in compliance with the American Disabilities Act.

Supporters said they want proof that is cheaper to tear it down than to restore it.

"Our group is not here to lay down in front of a bulldozer," said Schaeffer.  "We'd just like to see the information that the city has, be able to look at it in a public fashion."
