MEMPHIS (WMC TV) - Crown them the cinco mejor of Cinco De Mayo.

They are the five best Mexican restaurants in the Memphis area, according to our partners at La Prensa Latina (

* BEST ORIGINAL DISHES:  Salsa, Regalia Shopping Center (6150 Poplar Ave.), East Memphis, (901) 683-6325.

"They have different dishes than, you know, the typical fajita or enchilada," said La Prensa Latina's Amalur Munoz.

Salsa's owner Cesar Parra prides himself on his one-of-a-kind creations, like his mushrooms sauteed in wine and seasoned in chipotle and Colorado sauce.

"A nice meal to enjoy with somebody you really love," gushed Munoz.

"I just like how everything tastes," said Lisa McCalla of Eads, TN. "It's authentic, and it just tastes really great."

ANDY'S SALSA RECOMMENDATIONS:  Mushrooms in Wine, Shrimp Quesadilla, Yellow Fin Tuna w/Black Bean Sauce, San Diego Salmon w/Avacado Verde & Zucchini, Flauta De Pollo

* BEST MEXICAN SEAFOOD:  Playita Mexicana, 6194 Macon Rd., East Memphis, (901) 377-2282.

"Having ceviche (raw white fish marinated in citrus juices) or red snapper, there's a big variety of seafood at Playita Mexicana," said David Vasquez of La Prensa Latina. "Every time I come here, it's fresh."

ANDY'S PLAYITA MEXICANA RECOMMENDATIONS:  Tostada De Ceviche, Ceviche De Pescado, Shrimp Ceviche, Red Snapper, Tacos Chorizo, Great Salsa!

* BEST OUTDOOR DINING:  On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina, 4552 Poplar Ave., East Memphis, (901) 763-0569.

Despite the fact it is a part of a Dallas-based chain, On The Border's location across the street from Oak Court Mall is a favorite gathering-place for local Hispanics, according to Munoz.

"They like the festive patio, beer and margarita selections," she said. "And the dips!"

"I really like the Chicken Con Queso (actually called the Chicken Fundido)," said Kristina York of East Memphis.

"The food! The patio! The margaritas!" whooped Akia Mathis of Southeast Memphis.

ANDY'S ON THE BORDER RECOMMENDATIONS:  Chicken Fundido, Firecracker Jalapenos, Steak Chimichanga.

* BEST ATMOSPHERE:  El Toro Loco Mexican Bar & Grill, 2809 Kirby Rd., East Memphis, (901) 759-0593.

Creative, colorful margaritas. Mexican martinis. Stone-heated appetizers like the Molcajete (steak, chicken, sausage, cheeses and cactus!).

The tastes are complemented by a gorgeously sleek bar that ought to beat down your buddies' sports bar environments!

"The environment is amazing," said Munoz.

"Very fast, always hot, the people are friendly," said Velvet Churchill of Chickasaw Gardens. "It's really good."

ANDY'S EL TORO LOCO RECOMMENDATIONS:  Molcajete, Fajita El Toro Loco, Great Place to Gather for Any LOCAL Special Event (Grizzlies games, playoffs, Election night, etc.).

* BEST SERVICE:  El Porton, 1805 N. Germantown Parkway/Dexter, Cordova, TN, (901) 624-9358.

The food and drinks at Cordova's El Porton are always consistent, but what puts patrons in the seats -- and what won La Prensa Latina's vote -- is the restaurant's professional, polite and speedy servers.

"Outstanding customer service," Vasquez said. "The best among Memphis Mexican restaurants."

ANDY'S EL PORTON RECOMMENDATIONS:  Ask for servers Jose Sevilla or Nellie Braham; Pollo Adobe; Sky, Surf & Turf Dip; Cheese Dip; Tilapia Chipotle
