"Mohawk Girl" looks back on photo that changed her life - WMC Action News 5 - Memphis, Tennessee

(WMC-TV) – When she was arrested four years ago for driving under the influence, Anna Fletcher's wild hairdo made headlines around the world.

Now, the "Mohawk girl," as she was known back then, has a new hairstyle, a new name, and a new outlook on life.

In 2007, her hair stood tall, as did her unique personality.

"It's something you don't see every day," she said of her hairstyle in a 2007 interview. "I like to do things I don't see every day."

Anna was arrested for DUI on her 25th birthday, and the photo of her mugshot quickly went viral.  Four years later, the Mohawk is gone, and Anna a college student majoring in law enforcement.

"I'm a little bit more mature now, I guess," she said in a recent interview. "I guess I got a bit wiser."

She's changed more than her hair.  She's now Anna Clifford, 29-years-old, a divorced single mom raising her two-year-old son, Connor.

Clifford credits her son, along with his brother, Keegan, changing her life in September of 2008.

"I got pregnant with my son who was actually a twin, and his brother had a birth defect," she said.

Connor lived, but Keegan died eight days after his birth.

"By the time he was born he had no kidneys," she said. "He passed away at LeBonheur."

Clifford moved to Ohio, changed her hair and got a fresh start by enrolling in college.

"It was like a big turning point for me," she said.

Now, Clifford is on her way to getting a degree in law enforcement. She plans to move back to Memphis, and perhaps work for the police department that arrested her four years ago.
   
"After I lost my son I felt like if I didn't do something with my life, it'd be a dishonor to him," she said.
