The Booker T. Washington community is ecstatic, with news that in less than one week, President Barack Obama will deliver their commencement address.More >>
(WMC-TV) - Sometimes dreams do come true. The students and faculty at Booker T. Washington High School in Memphis had a dream that their hard work would result in a bonus – a graduation visit from the President of the United States.
The competition for this national honor was stiff, but the school made the list of six finalists. Then, they made an even shorter list – one of three schools the President himself would choose from. This week, they received the great news that President Barack Obama had in fact chosen Booker T. Washington as the winning high school where he will attend graduation ceremonies and deliver the commencement speech.
The school's principal, Alisha Kiner, the teachers and students deserve all the credit for this. They did the hard work of improving graduation rates and test scores in an inner city high school. We hope the President does as good of a job inspiring them as Team BTW did inspiring all of us.
