MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Noting his global flight plan resembles a giant "M" for Memphis, city leaders gave a heartfelt "bon voyage" Friday to Wei Chen at the Peabody Hotel.

The 39-year-old entrepreneur and pilot came to the University of Memphis in 1996 to earn an MBA.

"Me and my wife we came here with nothing," he said. "We are very fortunate to have scholarship at University and then start our business and become successful."

Now the owner of a plane newly christened "the Memphis Wei," the businessman will try to become the first Chinese citizen to fly a private plane around the world!   The goodwill flight to 40 cities over 70 days will give Wei a chance to tell his Memphis success story.

Wei Chen founded a Memphis-based company that makes scaffolding in China and sells construction products worldwide.  He will also will help introduce China's 1.3 billion people to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital:

"I think that's a huge potential for St. Jude and for the people to get to know St. Jude and to build a relationship with people over there," he said.

CCTV, Chinese Central Television, sent a crew to Memphis to tell Wei's story:  Wei plans to return to Memphis on July 30 with new business contacts from around the world, and perhaps new opportunities for the city he now calls home.
