Former employee charged with Sam's Club scam

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) -  Action News 5 found only satisfied customers at the Sam's Club on Winchester Road in Southeast Memphis until we told them a former employee was charged with stealing money from people just like them.

"Oh my," said one customer.

"That's no surprise," said another.  "Just happens everywhere, you know?"

Samira Hernandez of Olive Branch bonded out of jail a day after her arrest on theft charges that actually date back several years.

According to court records, she admitted to accessing membership information in order to get credit card numbers which she used to purchase more than $25,000 worth of gift cards.

Police say a customer in Texas was the first to notify Sam's Club after noticing something fishy on his credit card statement.  They say Hernandez confessed to a loss prevention employee once confronted about the scam.

Action News 5 was unable to get her side of the story in a Olive Branch neighborhood near the state line or at the house where neighbors said she lived.

"I don't know..I'm Rodriguez," said a women outside the house.

Police say money stolen from customers was credited back to their accounts while Sam's Club agreed to suffer the loss.
