Andy's Rest. Scorecard: Vegan dishes & tea tie for the high

(WMC TV) - Two stores that have carved clever niches into the Mid-South restaurant market tied for the Scorecard's High Score of the Week.

Teavana in The Shops of Saddle Creek, 7509 Poplar Avenue, Germantown, TN, and Imagine Vegan Cafe, 2156 Young Ave. in Cooper-Young/Midtown Memphis, earned a 98 on their Memphis-Shelby County Health Department inspections.

Teavana (www.teavana.com) sells high-quality tea brewers, sets and accessories, along with 99 varieties of loose-leaf teas, hot and iced.

I dig the Youthberry:  a fruity, hydrating cup of love!

"It's a white tea, rich in anti-oxidants with berries and fruits and apples," said Beth Szuhay, manager of Teavana's Germantown store.

Adam and Kristie Jeffrey opened Imagine Vegan Cafe (http://www.imaginevegancafe.com/) a little more than a month ago to offer what they called a "compassionate dining" alternative.

"We don't eat animal or animal products, so we're being compassionate to the animals," said Adam. "Our goal is to provide food for people, without causing harm to people or animals."

Pig out on vegetarian versions of your meaty favorites here. The Vegan Memphis, a shredded barbecue wheat-soy sandwich with slaw and fries, has the same texture and flavor as pork. The Messy Dog is a beef-substitute chili dog with seven spicy toppings.

Add the vegan dessert creations of Karina Kahn, like her banana-blessed Flying Elvis cake, and you might just forget you're a carnivore!

"Vegetarian food has come a long way, and it actually tastes real, so come on down and get you some," said enthusiastic customer Erin Swinney of Bartlett, TN.

LOW SCORE OF THE WEEK:

Cracker Barrel, 8000 Lowrance Rd. off Hacks Cross in Southeast Memphis, rated a 74 on May 23 with a food permit suspension notice:

"dishwasher not properly sanitizing"

"waste water leak from (dishwashing) sink"

"mold build-up on wall"

"beef & ham (at potentially hazardous food temps.)"

The store's manager insisted we take its inspection up with Cracker Barrel's corporate offices in Lebanon, TN.

Julie K. Davis, Cracker Barrel's senior director of corporate communications, responded with this e-mail statement:

"Please know that the isolated critical violations were corrected the same day as the inspection and that the Quality Assurance Department from the Home Office is following up at the store to ensure that both the Health Department's and Cracker Barrel's internal standards are maintained. Cracker Barrel has systems and processes in place to ensure that all our quality standards are met. Food safety is one critical component of those standards. We strive everyday to ensure that all food served at our restaurants is of the highest quality and safe to eat."
