GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A Gulfport man faces charges in the slaying and sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl who was taken from an apartment complex last week. Police identified Alberto Julio Garcia as a person of interest several days ago. Ja-Naya (juh-NAY'-uh) Thompson's body was found in an abandoned trailer on July 17.

VICKSBURG, Miss. (AP) - Police in Vicksburg have identified a man found inside an 18-wheeler, parked at a weigh station on Interstate 20. The Warren County coroner's office says the man in the truck was 53-year-old Tommy Leford, of Trenton, Georgia. Police don't suspect foul play but it hasn't been ruled out.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Eleven current or former Mississippi Army National Guard members have been indicted in a case alleging they swindled money through a program that offers incentives for recruiting. A federal prosecutor says the defendants also falsely represented they assisted in the recruitment of certain potential soldiers when they had not actually assisted in the recruitment.

MIAMI (AP) - Hurricane forecasters in Miami say a tropical depression in the Atlantic has weakened to a tropical wave as it approaches the Lesser Antilles. Its maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph. Forecasts say the storm is likely to move westward and weaken.
