Wife says husband responsible for attempted murder-suicide

(WMC-TV) - A retired Memphis Police officer was killed and his wife injured after a double shooting at their home Friday.

The woman found shot in her home, 51-year-old Regina Daniel, told family members that her husband, 63-year-old Troy Daniel, was responsible. She said her husband then turned the gun on himself.

Troy Daniel was a 23-year veteran of the Memphis Police Department.

Action News 5 reporter Justin Hanson is a family member of Regina Daniel. Hanson said Regina Daniel was alert Saturday and remembers everything that happened.

"Still in shock, it's hard to believe," said Hanson. "Apparently, shot her in the neck and she put her hand up and it got her hand and elbow. The bullet that went in the neck ricocheted into her torso, causing her lung to collapse, I think."

Hanson said she and her husband were in an argument Friday afternoon at their home on Walsh Road near Shelby Forest.

"He walked in with some kind of rage and look in his eye, and pulled out a gun and shot her," said Hanson.

She told family members that Troy Daniel shot her three times. She said she then ran into a bedroom and heard two more shots.

When sheriff's deputies arrived, Regina Daniel was being taken to the MED. Troy Daniel was found dead, lying on his back with two gunshot wounds to the chest.

The two were married for 12 years. Hanson said he was not aware of any problems in their marriage.

Hanson said Troy Daniel suffered a stroke that nearly killed him a couple of years ago. His only daughter died several years ago.

Hanson said if Troy Daniel was depressed, he did not know it.

"There's been no reason to expect something like that," he said.

Hanson said a bullet is still lodged near Regina Daniel's lung, making it difficult for her to breathe.

"She blessed," he said. "Lucky to be alive."

The Shelby County Sheriff's Department said the motive for the shooting was still unclear. A spokesperson said the case is still under investigation.
