Woman scammed out of hundreds of dollars in her driveway

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South woman wants to warn others after she was cornered in her driveway and scammed for hundreds of dollars Wednesday.

"I absolutely cannot believe what happened," said Bess Katzen.

Katzen, 89, said a man and a woman followed her to her East Memphis home, claiming they had seen a part fall off her engine.

"And this man got out behind the wheel and came into the garage and told me he was a mechanic," said Katzen.

The man told Katzen he could repair her transmission.  He talked her into going with them to make the $400 worth of repairs.

While the suspects drove Katzen to the bank to withdraw hundreds of dollars, the male suspect drove her car to an auto parts store to buy the parts to make the repair.

"I did everything just the opposite of what I would ordinarily have done.  What happened to me?" asked Katzen.  "Did I go crazy?  I must have lost my mind."

They all met up near the AutoZone store where the man said he had fixed the problem.  Katzen was skeptical but did not ask questions.

"I just thought I can't ask, they're being so nice," she said.  "I can't act like I don't trust them."

Katzen believes trust may have saved her life.  She said she fears what might have happened if she had put up a fight.

"This way they got whatever they wanted without any problem," said Katzen.  "And I got home safely."

Katzen paid the man over $400.  When she got home, the rest of her money was missing from her wallet.

If you saw the two suspects at any time Wednesday between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. near the area of Park and Mt. Moriah, call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
