Woman fights off attacker on Shelby County walking trail

(WMC-TV) - A woman is recovering after she was attacked on a Shelby County walking trail.

Authorities said the woman was attacked Thursday on a trail behind Lowrance Elementary School.

According to investigators, the victim was walking along the trail when a 15-year-old suspect approached her. It appeared the suspect was going to keep on walking, but once he passed the victim, he turned around, jumped on her, knocked her on the ground and attempted to strangle her.

Investigators said the victim was carrying a pocket knife, and was able to stick her attacker in his behind. The suspect ran off, but was spotted soon after with blood running down his leg.

The victim later identified the juvenile as her attacker.

The news came as a shock to people like Jackie Cooper, who frequently use the trail.

"It's very surprising, because my son went to this school, and I used to jog on this trail every day," Cooper said. "But times have changed. Times have changed. I never had a problem running here."

The suspect was taken to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, where he underwent surgery. As soon as he is well, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office plans to charge him with aggravated assault.
