Hundreds of tires dumped next to Memphis business

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis business owner whose property neighbors a makeshift dumping ground said Friday the city is responsible for the mess and he wants it cleaned up.

Once the tire redemption program ended in February, hundreds of tires were dumped next to Peck Signs Specktacular Graphics.

"They're just everywhere," said business owner Scott Peck.  "They're just strewed out all over the place."

Peck said he is fed up with all the tires dumped near his sign company.

"It's a nuisance," he said.  "It degrades my property."

Peck Signs Spectacular Graphics has been in the same location for 22 years.

"When we bring customers in here, that's what they see," said Peck pointing to the tires.  "It looks like the tire redemption place is right here next to me."

Peck said the tires appeared in the abandoned lot next door when the February 2011 tire redemption program ended.

In late February, the health department wrote Peck a warning for 10 tires that had ended up on his lot.

"We picked those tires up the day that notice was given to us," he said.

Another mound of tires has now popped up in a city park across the street.

"It's ridiculous," said Peck.

Memphis City Code Enforcement said it was a Shelby County issue.  County officials said a crew will investigate next Tuesday morning.

Peck said he does not care how the problem is fixed.

"At this point, I just want the tires cleaned up."

The tires present a breeding ground for mosquitoes.  For that reason, code enforcement said it plans to lean on the county to fix the issue quickly.
