One homemade bomb explodes, another found near Mid-South playground

(WMC-TV) - Investigators in Forrest City, Arkansas want to know who planted two homemade bombs near a playground Friday.

The ordeal forced several residents to either move their vehicles or evacuate their apartments after one of the bombs exploded.

"The fire ball blew up about three feet high and it was enough to scare me," said Frankie Wolfe, who found the bomb.

What started as a typical day at work for Wolfe soon turned into a frightening situation the moment an explosive device attached to a garbage bin exploded.

Wolfe, a truck driver for King Disposal, had just arrived at Indian Hills Apartment to empty the bin when the device ignited.

"I had my fork halfway in it and it ignited," said Wolfe.  "When I backed up, part of it was still hanging on the fork."

Wolfe said he called his boss, Joe King, to tell him what happened.  King, along with the police and fire investigators, arrived on the scene.

King said that was when something told him to check the other bins in the apartment complex.  To his surprise, he discovered a second bomb attached to another dumpster just a few feet from a playground.

"I had no desire to mess with it," said King.  "I knew that the device could possibly explode."

King said the explosive device was wrapped in a plastic bag.  Someone stuffed it into the sleeve of the dumpster.

Authorities reportedly had to detonate the bomb.  King said he was thankful no one was hurt.

"Kids being inquisitive by nature may have thought there was something in the bag and grabbed it," said King.  "But luckily, none of the kids was out at that time."

"Putting it next to a playground, somebody's got a sick mind," said Wolfe.

Arkansas State Police are investigating to determine who is responsible for the bombs.
