Avon Neighborhood residents celebrate July 4th in grand style

(WMC-TV) - From pets to people of all ages, residents of the Avon Neighborhood in East Memphis celebrated July 4th in grand style.

"It's a wonderful event, every year the neighborhood puts this together and we love to be a part of the parade and hand out balloons," said resident Lydia Hart.

Starting with the national anthem, neighborhood residents gathered Monday for their sixth annual 4th of July parade, featuring classic cars and patriotic sounds.

"Today is the day we became free," resident Emma Marks said.

One of the highlights of this year's parade was the Avon Neighborhood Dixieland Band. Featuring local residents, the band set the stage for the morning's patriotic parade and walk around the neighborhood.

Members of the Mid-South Antique Automobile Club lead this year's parade, followed by hundreds of Avon residents and their children.

"But to be able to put aside about 20 minutes going around one block, forgetting about everything but the fact that this is America - we love it," resident Carter Davis said.

Some parade goers traveled from as far away from Knoxville to attend this year's event.

As residents made their way around the block, others in the area came out of their houses to mark the special occasion.

"I just love July 4th, always have since I was a little kid, our country's birthday, and the best way to celebrate is to dress up," Hart said.
