Former restaurant manager charged with gambling revenues

(WMC-TV) - News of a former manager's arrest quickly spread Wednesday afternoon among the early birds at the busy China Inn on Elvis Presley Boulevard.

"Whatever it is," said one customer, "he's in a hell of a lot of trouble."

"It doesn't surprise me what people do today, in general," said another customer.

Siu Mak, 57, of Memphis is charged with felony theft for failing to deposit more than $7,000 in restaurant revenue at the bank.

Police said he later told his boss he lost the money gambling at the Tunica casinos.

Action News 5 informed Mak's boss about the arrest, which comes three years after the crime.  That is due, in part, to the backlog of active warrants and often erroneous address information with which deputies have to deal.

China Inn's owner did not want to go on record.  However, according to an affidavit, the restaurant took a loss of exactly $7,249.

"Well, a lots happening these days," said a China Inn customer.  "And some people do anything for money."

Even if it means, he said, losing your job and eventually ending up in jail.

Siu Mak is due in court later this month.
