Decomposing body found in ravine

(WMC-TV) - Utility workers found a badly decomposed body in a ravine Friday morning near Millington.

Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Chip Washington said an AT&T crew working along Walsh Road, near Highway 51 and Fite, discovered the body after first noticing a foul odor.

"When he looked over, he saw a body wrapped in what appeared to be a blanket," said Washington.

The body was in a ravine underneath a small bridge, and appeared to be wrapped in a blanket.

Although badly decomposed, investigators believe the body is that of a male.

"It appears, from preliminary reports, that the body's been out there two, maybe three days, based on decomposition," said Washington.  "I'm told nearby neighbors actually noticed the odor in the last few days but didn't think to report it."

Investigators spent several hours processing the scene. Washington said the medical examiner will help identify the body and determine a cause of death.

"Once we figure out what we have, we're gonna refer to databases and check missing persons reports," he said. "Obviously we know we have a human body with a family, so we're going to do everything we can to identify this individual."

Phil Long's house and archery shop are within 100 yards from where the body was found.  He and his wife figured the odor was a dead deer or other animal.

"I know my wife was first to pick it up," said Long.  "She's an RN nurse and she picked it up that something was dead here close by."

At this point, investigators are not ruling out a crime. Anyone with any information about the body should call police.
