(WMC-TV) - Despite a Memphis police officer's death in the line of duty just last week, crime in the city of Memphis is down.

Officer Timothy Warren was shot and killed answering a call at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Memphis last weekend. But, officials said Monday, that part of still has the lowest crime rate in the city.

It was welcome news for Bruce Mirans, a local tourist.

"I've seen officers in my strolls around town, and that helps," he said.

According to Memphis Police, crime downtown has gone down over the past three years. Officials said crime has decreased a little over 20 percent this year, with roughly 230 fewer victims than last year.

North Memphis has the city's highest crime rate, with more than 4,000 reported crimes so far this year, but that's down by almost 9 percent from last year.

Southeast Memphis has the second highest crime rate, with 3,500 reported crimes this year but according to Memphis police, down 7 percent from last year.

"In all of the cuts we have not taken one officer off the streets," Memphis Mayor A C Wharton said. "Boots on the ground. We're going to stay beefed up, exactly where we need to be."

Wharton says the city is doing what is can to address those areas that are not so safe.

"They always say that 20 percent of the individuals commit 80 percent of the crime," he said. "We know who that 20 percent is both in the youthful ages and those who have been in the system over and over again, so yes, we've identified these areas.  Raleigh, Frayser is one of these areas."

Wharton said there is still a lot of work to do to keep crime down, and his goal is to make sure every citizen in Memphis feels safe.
