MY TURN: "Free lunch" debate

(WMC-TV) - My favorite definition of leadership is to "show the right way by going first." And then, we have the Shelby County Commission.

At one point during Monday night's meeting, Commissioner James Harvey said, "You know I sit here and I watch us and we're just like a bunch of idiots." Well, I'm not going to argue with him.

The issue of course is the so-called "free lunch" debate. As a symbolic gesture, at a time when the county has had to lay off some employees and cut the pay of others, some commissioners wanted to stop providing themselves with taxpayer-funded meals for their meetings.

This gesture, however small, certainly squares with my definition of leadership, showing the right way by going first. But that's not the way the Shelby County Commission rolls. A majority of the commissioners voted to keep the meals coming.

So, if you have a reason to attend a Shelby County Commission meeting, please do not stand in between the commissioners' seating area and the room where the lunches are served. You may get run over.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
