Overnight shooting and house fire on Latham Street

(WMC-TV) - For some residents, Latham Street starting to feel less like a neighborhood, and more like a war zone.

Red lights and blue lights bathed the 1300 block of Latham Street early Friday morning, where firefighters worked to put out a fire they say was intentionally set.  Meanwhile, detectives worked to gather clues on Memphis's latest homicide.

"I just know my mom was on her way to the store," Clary Thomas said. "She got gunned down on her way to the store.

Thomas identified the shooting victim as her mother, 48-year-old Barbara Goldsmith. Police said the victim was talking to two men on Latham Street when the shots were fired at 11:15 Thursday night.

She died at the scene.

"For her to die when she was just walking to the store...what kind of world is it where you can't walk to the store?" Thomas asked.

Four hours after the shooting, firefighters were called to a home on the same block, after someone set it on fire. It is the same house where two women were shot early Tuesday morning.

That morning, two women were sitting on the front porch of the house when police say someone in a white van opened fire. A 46-year-old woman was shot in the stomach, and a 30-year-old woman was shot in the leg.

Both were in non-critical condition at last update.

"It's a lot of unnecessary crime on this block," said Patrice Mitchell, a neighbor. "It needs to stop."

"My mother's been here 48 years." Thompson added. "48 years. I never though she would die in her own neighborhood."

If you have information about the shooting or the fire, call Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.
