(WMC-TV) - A Memphis City Council member's son faces weapon and drug charges and this isn't the first time Kelvin Burrus has had a run-in with the law.

Burrus, the son of Councilwoman Wanda Halbert, is in trouble once again with the law. He's charged with possessing a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and a gun.

Memphis police say they pulled Burrus over Wednesday in Orange Mound for running a stop sign.

According to court records, police officers noticed a glass pipe with a green leafy substance in it during the stop. After officers searched the car they found another pipe, a gun, and 82 rounds of ammunition.

Halbert declined to speak on camera, but did email a statement.

"Of course, as a mother, I love this little boy I brought into the world," she wrote in her email. "He is an adult and must be responsible for his own actions. We have systems of laws and courts to handle these kinds of matters. I have no further comment. Thank you."

This isn't the first time Burrus has been in trouble with the law. Back in 2009, officers stopped him on another traffic violation where police say they also found marijuana. But instead of taking Burrus to jail, they first called Halbert.

That's when former Memphis Police Director Larry Godwin ordered an internal investigation to see if Halbert, who went to the scene, had influenced his officers, who could have taken Burrus to jail.

However, the MPD later determined that Halbert did not interfere with a police investigation involving her son.

Burrus is due back in court on September 8. He's out of jail on $2,500 bond.
