Three BTW grads return to Memphis after White House internship

(WMC-TV) - Three Booker T. Washington High School graduates are back in Memphis after an internship at the White House.

Saturday, they said thank you to some Whitehaven businesses that made their trip to Washington, D.C. extra special.

"Thank you to Macy's and Sears and the Southland Mall for reaching out to us," said Washington Experience Intern Christopher Dean.  Christopher Dean.

"I am just so grateful to them," said Washington Experience Intern Vashti Taylor.

After the weeklong White House internship, the graduates were back in Memphis and thanking Macy's and Sears for donating the clothes they wore to the White House.

"We got a chance to know what the president wants to do for this country," said Dean.

Dean became an international phenomenon after introducing President Barack Obama at his graduation in May.

"The fact that the president came here, he opened other people's eyes to see that this is a great community that everyone puts down," said Dean.  "This city is a great city."

Fellow intern Taylor said their subsequent trip to the White House was a privilege of a lifetime.

"We got to go on exclusive tours," said Taylor.  "There was one sign that said, 'Do Not Go Beyond That Point,' and we actually got to go beyond that point."

"And actually go into the offices and see the president's actual office and all that the president has," said Dean.  "That was the most exciting thing."

They said their experiences in Washington are challenging them to compete on a higher level.

"They're trying to get us all on a higher plane, to get us the experience that no one ever really had so that we can get more opportunities and more doors will open," said Taylor.

Taylor is now enrolled at UT Chattanooga and Dean is eyeing LeMoyne Owen College.
