DeSoto County awards new trash contract

(AP) - The DeSoto Board of Supervisors has approved a 6-year contract with a new garbage hauler, California-based Waste Connections.

The Commercial Appeal reports the new contract, approved Monday, includes the county's first curbside residential recycling effort, a voluntary program that kicks in after 5,000 sign up.

The contract and the new waste service for 11,000 residents in unincorporated sections starts Oct. 1. The rate for residential collection based on weekly pickup of a 95-gallon cart will be $8.48 monthly.

That's an increase of about a dollar over the current BFI contract expiring Sept.30, but $2 less than the rate BFI had offered to renew service. Customers are billed quarterly.
