Cops: Mom tried to sell newborn at Taco Bell

HAZEL DELL, WA (KATU/CNN) - A Washington mother has been accused of trying to sell her 3-day-old baby at a Taco Bell restaurant.

Police say Heidi Gasaway tired to sell her newborn for as little as $500.

"I just don't understand how she would take a baby like that and try to sell it," said Oliver Morris, owner of Kay Motel, where Gasaway was arrested Friday.

Morris had rented a room to Gasaway and noticed that she had a newborn with her.

"She was trying to sell the baby to get some money so she could skip town, go someplace else so she could start a new life," Morris said.

According to court documents, Gasaway approached a woman at a nearby Taco Bell and made the offer, and the asking price was between $500 and $5,000.

The woman refused and called 911 when Gasaway left. The police arrested her at the motel.

Gasaway is charged with a Class C felony and faces up to five years in prison if convicted.

"At least the baby's alive, let's put it that way," Morris said. "I would rather see the baby taken into foster care rather than her try and get rid of it some other way and skip town."

The baby is now is state custody.
