Report: Americans aren't getting proper dental care

(CNN) - Nearly 34 million Americans aren't getting proper dental care, according to a new study released last week.

The report from the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council also says that 62 percent of retirees didn't have dental insurance in 2006.

It finds that millions of children and older people don't get dental checks, because they cannot afford it.

But having bad teeth can cause numerous health problems.

Officials say poor oral health can lead to heart disease, diabetes and respiratory illness.
