ANSONIA, CT (WVIT/NBC) - Jeff Glazer will be returning for his freshman year at Ansonia High School with a companion that could save his life.
Glazer is highly allergic to peanuts, but his yellow lab is trained to sniff out any traces of them to keep him safe.
"I wished I was normal, I wished I was just a normal kid who didn't have an allergy," Glazer said.
The Glazers spent $10,000 to buy Riley, who was professionally trained over eight months.
"He's saved me from reactions so many times, he's a real lifesaver. It's amazing. I'm able to go to movies; I can bring him over to sleep-overs and parties and have him search the food. I can actually have birthday cake at birthday parties and that kind of stuff," Glazer said.
While Riley plays an important role, Jeff's mom knows his safety is ultimately up to him.
"It's a safety net, it really is, he still needs to use his head and ask questions and read labels, but we sleep a lot better," Glazers mother said.
The Glazers are accommodating to others who have dog allergies as well.
They said Ansonia school leaders have been extremely helpful, even giving Jeff an extra set of books for home use since he has Riley and his pop up crate to carry to school.
