PULLMAN, WA (CNN) - A 12-year-old tortoise got a swiveling wheel on his shell with the help of Washington State University.
Gamera, the African spur-thighed tortoise, had a life-threatening leg injury. His owner took him to Washington State University's veterinary teaching hospital in April. There, doctors determined the front left leg had to be amputated.
After surgery, they attached a swiveling wheel to his shell to take the place of the missing limb.
The vets say he's adjusting well and thriving.
Gamera is named after the flying turtle monster in Japanese movies from the 1960s.
