Family copes with devastating blaze that destroyed home

The house caught fire late Thursday afternoon. The house caught fire late Thursday afternoon.

(WMC-TV) - Why did a Frayser home suddenly catch fire and later explode? It's a question fire investigators and the home's owner are both trying to answer.

The fire broke out in a home in the 3600 block of Suzanne Drive late Thursday afternoon.

"I had a house full of stuff," said Larry Wilson, whose family lived in the home. "Now you see what I got on that truck. That's it."

Friday, yellow tape caution tape and wet, burnt wood were remnants of the raging fire. Wilson said he was inside playing Wii with family members, including five children, when a neighbor banged on the door to tell them something was smoldering.

"I took it as a joke," Wilson said. "Because we was in the house playing a game, so I took it as a joke. Next thing I know, man, the house on fire."

Once firefighters brought the flames under control, investigators said, something exploded.

A total of 5 firefighters were hurt, suffering from back, neck, and hip injuries, along with heat exhaustion and high blood pressure. All five have been treated and released, and are expected to be fine.

Meanwhile, the people inside the house, along with their pets, escaped unscathed.  Thursday, investigators had not determined what cause the fire, and the subsequent explosion.

While there are still not answers, the family that lived in the home was struggling to cope.

"One morning you've got a house, and today you don't even know where your going to be staying the next minute," Wilson said.
