Residents say Mid-South apartments infested with bed bugs

(WMC-TV) - Residents say hundreds of bed bugs have invaded their Mid-South apartment complex, making it hard for them to sleep at night.

"I sleep on the couch because there are too much bed bugs," said resident Gladys Locada.

Many tenants at the New Willow Apartments near New Willow and Getwell are dealing with an infestation of bed bugs.  It has been so bad, Locada had marks on her arm to prove it.

"All the time they bite me," said Locada.  "They bite everybody."

Residents threw out their mattresses and furniture hoping to get rid of the bed bugs.

"We had to get rid of a bed," said resident Valerie Rios.  "Two beds, I think it was."

"It just seems like not matter what you do, they just keep coming back," said resident Keith Quarles.

Quarles showed Action News 5 documents from the Memphis Shelby County Health Department which confirmed there is an infestation.

New Willow Apartments landlord Peter Wofford said the problem is being dealt with.

"We've been over there spraying every week for the last month," said Wofford.  "I take care of my tenants and we're going to continue to take care of our tenants."

"It's not the landlord's fault," said Rios.  "He's doing his best, he's spraying and going out of his way to make sure we're comfortable."

Quarles said several residents have moved out of the bed bug problem and he has refused to pay his rent until they are gone.

"Something has to be done about it, because old ladies and babies are being bitten up," said Quarles.

According to health officials, it is up to the landlord to ultimately take care of the problem.
