Eight-year-old Tippah County boy accidentally shot to death

Brandon Wilbanks was killed Friday in the accidental shooting. Brandon Wilbanks was killed Friday in the accidental shooting.

(WMC-TV) - Authorities in Tippah County are investigating the accidental shooting death of an eight-year-old boy.

The shooting happened Friday afternoon inside a residence on Highway 2, south of Ripley.

Authorities said Brandon Wilbanks, his twin brother Micah, and a younger sibling were playing in a bedroom when a 12 gauge shot gun was accidentally fired, striking Brandon.

Brandon's great-grandfather, O.V. Short, said the boy was struck once in the left arm and chest.

"My granddaughter, she pulled him up and called 911," Short said. "The helicopter came, and they couldn't find a place to set it down, so the ambulance came. The doctor said he couldn't save him if he had been sitting right beside him."

Investigators said the gun belonged to the children's father. Officials believe the shooting was completely accidental, and no charges will be filed.

Short said Brandon had an infectious smile and was full of life.

"They get out here and played ball all the time together," he said.

For family members, getting beyond this tragedy will be tough, especially on Micah, who has lost his twin brother.

"It'll probably take a lot of effort to try keep that other little boy straight so he won't be too mad and upset over it," Short said.

Funeral services for Brandon Wilbanks were held Sunday.
