Bride turns search for perfect wedding dress into dream business

(WMC-TV) – The perfect wedding dress is a must for many brides, so imagine actually purchasing 26 dresses before settling on the right one.

Bridal salon owner Joelle Scholl knows the challenges of picking the perfect dress while sticking to a budget. Scholl, the owner of the Barefoot Bride, boasts a collection of 850 affordably priced designer wedding gowns.

Scholl's bridal business was built on the search for her own wedding dress - a shopping spree that began with a dress she purchased online.

"I got a good deal on it," she said. "It arrived, (and) it was terrible. It was terrible for my body. It was a beautiful dress."

That's when her wedding plan turned into a business plan.

"I was like, gosh I've got to get rid of this, so I went ahead and sold it online and made some money, and went ahead and put the money towards what I was paying for the wedding," she said.

Joelle bought dress after dress, some as cheap as $18, and resold them for profit. She used the money to buy more dresses, still looking for the perfect one for her.

"Then we went through a few more dresses, and then I found this one," she said.

After purchasing 26 wedding dresses, Joelle married Memphis attorney Mike Scholl on New Year's Eve in 2010. The 25 gowns that didn't make the cut were re-sold to brides around the world.

"They were so excited, and I sold all over the country and all over the world," she said. "I've sold to England and these girls was just tickled to death to get the dress that I didn't want."

And School was tickled to see her own wedding budget shrink.

"I paid for most of our down payments on our wedding with the wedding dress money," she said.

Now this new bride has a new business, a bridal shop and a website, where her passion for wedding dresses helps brides everywhere avoid breaking the bank.

"Girls want to save money," Scholl said. "They want to go on honeymoons and buy houses."

Scholl donated wedding items to a bride we introduced you to last week who lost money to a runaway wedding planner.
