Health Expo signals ambitious goals for Hickory Ridge Mall

(WMC-TV) - Staffers at the Hickory Ridge Mall in Memphis are getting ready to welcome a whole lot of people.

Thursday, throughout the mall, crews were sprucing up and arranging the dozens of booths visitors will see at this weekend's Community Health and Safety Expo.

"This is one way to help the community kind of get a handle on their health," said Kathy Foster, an organizer of the event.

Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., medical professionals from a number of area hospitals will offer free screenings and testing for everything from high blood pressure to sickle cell anemia.

"Yes, this is a mall, but what we want to do is begin to transition into more than just a mall - into the concept of the Hickory Ridge Town Center," director Jimmy Haley said.

And mall officials say their upcoming expo is just the beginning. Plans are already under way to turn an entire wing of the facility into a medical complex. It's all part of a five year plan that will turn the mall into more of a town center, where visitors will find a wide array of services, along with traditional shopping.

"So that we can bring about wholeness to the community, and we don't want this to just be a band aid effect. We want this to be something that will ongoing," Foster said.

The mall's expo will also provide back to school supplies for families, as well as entertainment and other attractions for the whole family.

"We want to be a player in this community, making a difference and serving this community to the best of our ability," Haley said.
