Vigil held for Lorenzen Wright one year after body found

(WMC-TV) - One year after Memphis basketball great Lorenzen Wright was found murdered, friends, family and fans held vigils Thursday to remember Wright.

It has been one year since Wright's mother, Deborah Marion, got the dreaded phone call.

"This is when we actually found what I was looking for, my baby," said Marion.

People gathered in front of FedEx Forum Thursday to remember Wright, whose murder remains unsolved.

Wright had been missing for nine days when he was found shot to death in a field.

"I knew he wasn't going to be alive when they found my son, because he had been missing too long," said Marion.  "And I knew when they found him it was not going to be good."

Since then, Marion said she has been waiting for another phone call that investigators say they have finally found her son's killer.

"Money is going to make people talk, it's going to have to be money," she said.  "Somebody's going to tell a friend, that's how this is going to end."

An $8,000 reward produced only a handful of tips that led nowhere.  City leaders seem to be responding to the pressure of upping the ante.

"We're working on that," said Memphis Mayor A C Wharton.  "We have some legal things we have to go through, but we'll have an announcement on that real soon."

Marion said she only hopes it is not too late.

"I'm not giving up, I'm not tired yet," said Marion.  "My church sings that song, 'I'm Not Tired Yet.'  They sing it for me.  I'm not tired yet."
