Teen charged with setting family's house on fire

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis teenager was charged with setting fire to his own family's house Tuesday.

The 17-year-old suspect, Marques Blair, is being evaluated at Lakeside hospital, his grandfather said.  He is accused of setting the fire that destroyed his family's home.

The house on New York Lake went up in flames around 3:00 p.m. Tuesday.  Forty-nine emergency response personnel responded.

No one was hurt in the fire, although a firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

Neighbors said Blair argued with his mother about money before he set fire to his bedroom.  His grandfather called it a family tragedy.

"Sometimes things happen," he said.  "You have to keep moving, have to pray and keep moving."

The fire department determined the family did have a working smoking detector.  Damages to the house and belongings are estimated to be in excess of $60,000.
