Man fakes being wheelchair bound to rob bank

AHWATUKEE, AZ (KPNX/NBC) - Arizona police are on searching for a bank robber who used an unusual disguise to hold up a bank in Ahwatukee, AZ, on Tuesday morning.

The man rolled into the AmTrust Bank using a wheelchair, and once all the other customers had finished their business and left the building, he stepped from the wheelchair brandishing a weapon and demanded they hand over money.

"We don't have any of recent memory of where the getaway vehicle was a wheelchair," Andra Brown of the San Diego Police Department said.

The man then made a quick getaway on foot, leaving the wheelchair behind.

Witnesses described the man as Hispanic, in his late 20s or early 30s, 5' 8" tall, wearing sunglasses, jeans, a pinstriped shirt and a straw hat.

"It was a rouse to set the people at ease in there because few people would think a person in a wheelchair is going to rob a bank," said Tommy Thompson of the Phoenix Police Department.
