(CNN) - We could be very close to having long lasting flu shots that also protect against a variety of influenza viruses.
According to USA Today, the National Institutes of Health says the universal flu vaccine could be here within the next five years. This comes as Washington debates whether or not the slash the agency's budget.
The institute says about 200,000 people are hospitalized with the flu every year and thousands die from the virus each year as well.
