(WMC-TV) - Memphis is yet again a place of refuge for people escaping famine and violence.

Thursday afternoon the first of more than a dozen people arrived at Memphis International Airport.

Tesfageargis Gebrehiwot of Somalia was received by Catholic charities of West Tennessee with the intention of helping him resettle here in Memphis. The president and CEO says Catholic Charities is all about two things: providing help and bringing hope.

"We will welcome them (refugees) into Memphis, we will transport them into some housing that we've prepared for them, get them acclimated. The housing will have food and other things," Allen said.

"Just I feel better when I get here," Gebrehiwot said. He arrived after a 20 hour flight and walked for more than 8 hours to leave the borders of Ethiopia.

Volunteer families are matched with refugees to provide transportation, tutoring, and mentoring among other assistance.
