(WMC-TV) - In tough economic times, preparing children to go back to school can be put a strain on the family budget. Saturday, the Hickory Ridge Mall helped parents send their children back to class with a clean bill of health.

With just a few days left before it's time to head back to class, dental screenings were among dozens of free services offered at the mall's first ever Community Health and Safety Expo.

"They're doing everything from vision, dental,l and spinal exams - just getting everybody ready to go back to school," said Keeshanda Eddings, a parent whose children attended the expo.

Medical professionals from a number of area hospitals and the Mid-South Chapter of the American Red Cross volunteered their time and talent to children and adults in need of a checkup.

Parents on a tight budget said it was a life saver in more ways than one.

"Going back to school with everything you need is definitely essential to being a great student," one parent said.

And community oriented events like these may also prove to be a life saver for the Hickory Ridge Mall.

Organizers said the event was part of a long term plan to make the mall more of town center. In addition to retail, mall organizers want to make the mall a one-stop-shop for year-round necessities like mammograms and license renewals.

But Saturday, it was about getting kids back to school with a clean bill of health.

"That is the most important thing about the health care," Eddings said. "I pray they do it next year."
