Dyersburg teen shot to death

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A Dyersburg teen was shot to death early Saturday morning, police said Monday.

Just after 4:15 a.m. Saturday, police were called to the 1100 bloc of Parks Thurmond after residents reported hearing gunfire. There, police found the body of Jaron Edward Collins, 17, who died of apparent gunshot wounds.

Collins lived in Dyersburg with his aunt, and attended Ripley High School.

His godmother, Marta Bell, along with his mother, are both employed in law enforcement in Indianapolis.  Tuesday, Bell said they both drove to West Tennessee as soon as they heard what happened.

Bell said Collins had sent a text message to his mother not long before he was shot.

"He sent a text message saying, 'I love you Mom. Goodnight, I'm going to bed,'" Bell said.

Tuesday, people dropped off flowers and stuffed animals at the spot in where Collins was shot to death.

"He was just a nice young man, I've heard," said Dyersburg resident Tammy Hipps. "Anytime our children are killed, it just breaks my heart."

Police have a person of interest in the shooting, but no arrests have been made.

Investigators have not released a motive.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 901-285-TIPS.
