PHOENIX (KPNX/NBC) -Phoenix, AZ, police now say at 10-year-old girl who was found dead in a box was tortured by caregivers before she died.
Relatives of Ame Deal, John and Sam Allen, have been charged with kidnapping and first-degree murder.
Family members had claimed the girl died as a result of a game of hide-and-seek gone awry, but police have determined that the relatives who were supposed to care for her actually killed her.
She was found locked inside a box on July 12.
"Some of things alleged to have been done to this child over the few months was that she was fed hot sauce. She had dog fecal matter rubbed on her when she didn't pick up in the backyard and forced to eat it," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump.
An aunt who was Deal's legal guardian and a grandmother have also both been charged with kidnapping and child abuse.
"On this particular day when she as forced into the chest for disciplinary reasons, we are alleging the padlock was shut and she was left in there overnight by her guardians," Sgt. Crump said.
Police say the child was being punished for stealing food from the refrigerator.
