Airshow in Millington next month to benefit local charities

(WMC-TV) - In just a few weeks, dozens of airplanes will descend on Millington to put on a show for a good cause.

The Memphis Airshow is one of the most spectacular events in the MidSouth, but it wouldn't be possible if it wasn't for its original founder, Curt Watson.

Watson created the Memphis Airshow in 1999 to help raise money for scholarships for children with special needs at Madonna Learning Center - the school his own son once attended.

"For people with special needs children like Dustin, my child who has special needs, there's not necessarily a great support system," Watson said. "At least there wasn't in '99, as far as schooling."

In addition to being in the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame, Watson is a former New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers player.  Currently, he serves as a pilot for Fed-Ex, after spending  11 years as a Navy pilot, including four years with the world-heralded Blue Angels.

"Best job I've ever had," he said. "It was some of the best flying. I got to meet people around the country. (It was) just a very unique opportunity."

Watson says ever since FedEx came on board as a title sponsor of the Memphis Airshow, the event has been a huge success, and this year will be no different.

"We're thinking we're going to have a wonderful show," he said. "We've got a great lineup of performers and it should be an outstanding airshow.

And, a chance to help children and area charities in need.

"There are three recipients of the funds from the Airshow," Watson said. "That's Madonna Learning Center, the Memphis Oral School for the Deaf and the Chickasaw Council of the Boy Scouts of America."

The Memphis Airshow 2011 will be held September 17th and 18th at the Millington Regional Jetport.
