Missing Haywood County man found

(WMC-TV) - After hours of searching in the intense heat, a missing man was found alive late Tuesday night.

Oceola Johnson's prayers were answered when her husband of 56 years, 76-year-old Raymond Johnson, was found in Haywood County, Tennessee.

"I was praying to God for him to be OK," said Oceola Johnson.

Raymond Johnson was resting in a hospital in Jackson Wednesday, surrounded by his family.

The Alzheimer's patient wandered off from his rural Haywood County home Wednesday morning.

"When I went to get him, he was gone," said Oceola Johnson.

Raymond Johnson walked out of the back of his house and into the thick woods nearby.  He got lost, but stayed under the shade of trees trying to stay cool.

"He didn't know where he was going," said Oceola Johnson.  "He didn't know where he was."

His family and law enforcement searched for him using four-wheelers, dogs and a helicopter, but the woods were too thick.

"It was frightening," said his niece Ruby Bond.  "You know, sometimes things go through your mind, but we kept praying and praying."

As night fell 12 hours after Raymond Johnson disappeared, the Haywood County Sheriff's Department used a heat seeking device in a helicopter and located him not far from his home.

Raymond Johnson was not only alive, but in pretty good shape considering the heat.  He spent most of the day Wednesday sleeping, and his family said that was just fine.
