Country superstar looks for local talent to help raise money for charity

(WMC-TV) - One lucky Mid-South musician or band could soon be opening for country superstar Darryl Worley at his fundraising concert in September.

For 10 years, Worley has been raising money for Mid-South children at St. Jude and LeBonheur Children's Hospital.

As Worley prepares for his tenth annual Tennessee River Run in Savannah, Tennessee, he is also continuing a newer tradition.

He is looking for some good, local talent.

"It's a pretty big deal around here," said Worley.  "We've been doing this for the past two or three years.  We've got a lot of people that participate and we've got lots of people with great talent."

The annual river run is a way for area musicians and motorcyclists to raise thousands of dollars and have a little fun while doing it.

"The Darryl Worley foundation is also a sponsor of the Cystic Fibrosis foundation, and I have a nephew with Cystic Fibrosis," adds Tim Bumpus of Bumpus Harley Davidson.

Bumpus is getting involved with his own fundraiser.  He is hosting the first ever battle of the bands at his Harley dealerships in Memphis and Jackson.

Bumpus hopes motorcyclists and musicians from all over the Mid-South will come out in support.

"Part of the prize is recording time at Jackson Records if they win, and also getting in front of a large crowd of people at the Tennessee River Run," said Bumpus.

"You know, to have the talent these good bands give us and just the opportunity to go out to work hard to help the fellow man," added Worley.

Thursday's battle of the bands takes place at 7 p.m. at Bumpus Harley Davidson on Whitten Road.

The winner of this competition will have the opportunity to compete in the 2011 Battle of the Bands finals on August 27 at Bumpus Harley-Davidson of Jackson.
