DeSoto County School District kicks off new school year

(WMC-TV) - The new school year started Thursday morning for some 32,000 student in DeSoto County, the largest school district in the state of Mississippi.

The school district continues to grow at a fast rate, this year welcoming between 700 and 1,000 new students.

Trudy Pattberg, a computer teacher and 20-year veteran with the DeSoto County School District, prepared to welcome back the 1,400 student who attend Horn Lake High School.

"We have a new principal, so we're really fired up about him," said Pattberg.  "He's coming in and he's excited and got a love for the kids already."

This year is Principal Andy Orr's first at Horn Lake High School, but not his first year in the district.

"We had a high QDI and $5 million worth of scholarships, so our teachers are fired up about trying to beat that number," said Orr.  "As soon as these kids come in, we're ready to try and do it."

This marks the sixth year Horn Lake High School has been housed in its new building.

"I think it's a sign of the times that parents want the best education for their kids," said Pattberg.  "I don't have kids, but if I did, I would want them in the DeSoto County schools."
