LeMoyne-Owen College hosts back to school celebration

(WMC-TV) - Free games, free food and free backpacks full of school supplies were given away Friday at the Tom Joyner Back to School Celebration, sponsored by LeMoyne-Owen College, V101.1 and the City of Memphis.

"The economy has really hit everybody kind of hard," said 95.7 Hallelujah FM co-shot Eileen Collier.  "We're giving away school supplies, and that always helps."

Morning show co-hosts and other guests were there as part of the live broadcast.

"When I was growing up ... we got one pair of pants and you got one shirt and that was it," said comedian and co-host of the Tom Joyner Morning Show J. Anthony Brown.  "We got one pack of paper and that was to last you the entire year."

In the midst of an economic downturn, mother of five Tenicia Flowers said she was grateful for the event.

"Every year, we're like how are we going to get school supplies?" said Flowers.

"It's expensive because I have eight grandchildren, so I have to supply them," said grandmother and LeMoyne-Owen College alumni Gwen Flowers.

This marked the fourth annual Back to School Celebration for the Tom Joyner Morning Show, but the first time Memphis was selected.

Memphis Grizzlies players were also on hand passing out backpacks and encouraging students to stay fit this school year.

Brown said he hopes the supplies will make a difference.

"This is a head start," he said.  "This is to help parents put a little extra in their backpacks, if they got a backpack."
